So we try not to follow the typical pre-release hype cycle that a lot of movie websites indulge in. Every new still or poster getting its own post in the months leading up to blockbuster release, and then once it’s released maybe a quick review, leave your money on the bedside table and out the door, never to be spoken of again.
But this little bit of viral marketing genius for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus that showed up yesterday is a little different…
A lot of people are familiar with the TED talks that have been posted online for the last 5 or 6 years but I’m not sure we’ve ever seen one from the future… It debuted at TED 2012 on Tuesday.
Considered a seminal moment in the career of our founder Peter Weyland, this 2023 TED Talk launched Weyland Corp into the international spotlight.
Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.
Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.
You can find out more at weylandindustries.com and blog.ted.com/TED2023. The Washington Post has a nice write-up on the video’s creation here and writer Damon Lindelof gives the skinny to the TED blog here.
Ridley Scott’s Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce and Patrick Wilson and hits our screens on June 1st (UK/Ireland) and June 8th (US/Canada).
