A film about a chair. Narrated by James Franco.

Charles and Ray Eames

Last night I saw the trailer for the Jason Cohn and Bill Jersey documentary Eames: The Architect & The Painter which showed up on PBS and in selected cinemas in the U.S. at the tail end of last year. I’d read a bit about it then but the opportunity to see it never arose and I forgot about it. Which happens, us Spoooolers are human too.

The-hardest-working-man-in-showbusiness James Franco narrates the film which is effectively about a chair. Or to be more specific… the “hyper-creative forty-year epoch of the Eames Offices” of Charles and Ray Eames, two Modernist designers who shaped (lol) a lot of the 20th century’s most interesting trends including their legendary “Eames Lounge Chair“, best known for really hugging the curves of your arse.

The film looks like essential viewing for anyone with even a passing interest in design culture and plays in Toronto’s Bloor Hot Docs Cinema next week. It is also available online and on Region 1 DVD if that’s your thing.

Over to you Franco…

Nigel loves stupid films almost as much as he likes clever films. He'll watch anything but is usually drawn to documentaries, North American independent films, Irish cinema and gung-ho, balls-to-the-walls Hollywood blockbusters. Here's what he's been watching.
