So Toronto’s Hot Docs festival runs next month from April 26th to May 6th. It’s the world’s leading documentary festival and I’m still trawling through the extensive program working out what looks worthwhile.
One film to catch the eye is Despite the Gods from director Penny Vozniak. It chronicles Jennifer Lynch – daughter of David – as she enters the world of Bollywood film-making to direct her third film Hisss. The trailer certainly looks intriguing…
Jennifer Lynch is someone I’d never really heard of as she seems to have spent the best part of 20 years struggling to escape from her father’s rather large shadow.
The wikipedia “reception” segment for Hisss makes for pretty incredible reading and makes the whole film sound like an unmitigated disaster. Whether seeing this documented on-screen will make for enjoyable viewing is another thing altogether though. The questions have to be asked whether Despite the Gods has simply been released to chronicle another self-destruction.

Jennifer Lynch, daughter of cult film auteur David Lynch, made her auspicious directorial debut in 1993 with Boxing Helena at the Sundance Film Festival. A box office disaster, the film was viciously mauled by critics and became the focus of multiple lawsuits. Fifteen years later, a recovering addict and hard-working single mother, Lynch returns to the director’s chair with an ambitious project that will test her skills and the entire crew’s sanity. Despite the Gods brings us behind the scenes on the set of Lynch’s Bollywood/Hollywood action film about a man-eating snake goddess. Out of her depth shooting on location with an Indian crew and two top Bollywood stars, Lynch turns her production into a vehicle for her own self-actualization, paying no regard to timeline, budget or reality.
