Cannes 2012’s leaked line-up V the real list

Cannes 2012 Legit

So earlier this morning the Cannes Film Festival artistic director Thierry Fremaux announced the slate of films that are showing at this year’s festival. You’ll find the lists and a nice analysis from the LA Times here.

Personally I’m most excited to see Killing me Softly in there, the film sees Brad Pitt reuniting with Andrew Dominik who worked with him on the criminally under-rated Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

The full list of films is pasted in at the bottom of this post and is also available in pretty fonts with genuine festival laurels on the official Cannes site. No new Malick and no new Gosling/Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines) were the two disappointments for me, but it still looks like a fantastic mix of films that are going to have us all talking for the rest of the year.

But the trivial, but CRUCIAL, question that hasn’t been explored is how accurate the infamous blogdufestivaldecannes.com “leak” from a few weeks ago was. Of course it was pretty suspect to begin with, and it became more and more likely that the list was fake as various speculators weighed in but it was still fun to wonder for a few days before it was officially confirmed as phoney. Here was our story about the leaked list.

Here’s that fake list with the duds all struck out…

APRES LA BATAILLE Yousry Nasrallah
BIG HOUSE Matteo Garrone
THE BURIAL Terrence Malick
COSMOPOLIS David Cronenberg

Ouch. A measly seven out 22!

The life lesson we can all take from this is a simple one… Don’t trust the internet.

Anyway, here’s the real list of films showing in and out of competition.

Nigel loves stupid films almost as much as he likes clever films. He'll watch anything but is usually drawn to documentaries, North American independent films, Irish cinema and gung-ho, balls-to-the-walls Hollywood blockbusters. Here's what he's been watching.
