Páraic’s weekly look at film stories worth a second look…
1) The next Jameson Cult Film Screening is Lethal Weapon
The Jameson Cult Film Club is returning for a double screening of the 1987 action classic Lethal Weapon on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st May in a secret city centre Dublin location.
This special screening promises to transport the audience right into the heart of all the action. The venue will be completely transformed into scenes from the movie including Riggs’s trailer house and Murtaugh’s desk at LAPD homicide Department. These free events are more than just your typical screening, as characters from the movie, live theatre and special effects timed perfectly with on-screen action help to create an electric atmosphere throughout the screening.
Register for free tickets to this screening on jamesoncultfilmclub.ie.
DJ Aidan Kelly taking to the decks with sounds from the movie before and after the screening while guests are treated to ‘Riggsy’ burgers and refreshing Jameson, Ginger and Lime long drinks.
2) Magic Mike XXL Trailer
Contain yourself. Although it must be said it’s a pretty novel trailer poking some fun at how they are normally spoiler central.
The film is released on July 3rd and while it’s been directed by Gregory Jacobs, Steven Soderbergh is still the editor and DOP.
3) Son of Rambow is It
Bonus points if you got what this means. Yes Will Poulter who people can see treading the boards in Glassland at present but real fans were aware of him from Son of Rambow back in 2007 has signed on to play Pennywise the terrifying clown from Stephen King’s horror novel It.
Tim Curry played the role in an earlier version and this new incarnation will be spread over two films. The film will be directed by Cary Fukunaga whose C.V. includes Jane Eyre from 2011 and True Detective, so we know he can do moody set pieces with an edge.
4) John Wick 2
I hope the tagline for this is something like “You thought you couldn’t get on his Wick, well you were wrong” or some such.
Yes surprise, surprise there is going to be a John Wick 2 which makes perfect sense as it cost about $20million to make and has taken around $78million at the box office. In fairness Liam Neeson seems to be finally calling time on Taken so something has to fill the void.
5) Louis C.K. – I’m A Cop
Fans of Parks and Rec will know Louis C.K. – the funniest man of the moment – had a small cameo role in the show playing a police officer. Well now he’s decided to direct and star in his own cop feature film.
Apparently this will be the jist of it:
The script tells of a depressed middle-aged man who is a volunteer police officer living in the shadow of his mother, a highly decorated retired officer. When she dies, her continued influence forces him to become a real police officer, which is something he never wanted to be.
THR have the exclusive skinny and it can’t come soon enough.
